Rachet and Clank looks awesome and I like the way the online chat looks...It seems really clean and simple. Getting excited definitley...now I'm just hoping to be able to play the gorgeous games, that I won't have to drop around $80 bucks for one because they're Blu-Ray format.

These shots look good but there isn't any real action or anything going on in the background. It's easy to make a cutscene with nothing else to code but a car and a desert look good. They prolly had this stuff runnin at 30 fps. When the playable demos are out and they look like that I will be happy. But when there isn't much going on at once then I'm not impressed.

looks pretty nice from these shots, but I am definitely not seeing the "2X more powerful than the 360" PS3 from those shots.
From a purely graphical standpoint, F1 looks as good as PGR3, GRAW looks better than Resistance, Warhawk looks meh, the vehicle dynamics pics make me think of a sopmewhat prettier Full Auto, Motorstorm doesn't even come close to the CGI video, Getaway looks really good for a free-roaming game, and Ratchet & Clank looks amazing.
Hopefully these pics will help show people that there isn't such a great power divide between the 360 and PS3. There will be great games on both systems, and people will have a great time with both. Perosnally, I have a 360 and will probably get a PS3 when the price drops for all of the exclusive titles.

Yeah, this is definitely above what the Xbox can do. No more polygon edges! (yay) Yeah, the warhawk screens don't look THAT amazing...but the water and the clouds do. Look at that sunset! True volumetrics take forever to render(up to 20 minutes per frame), so I'm shocked that PS3's doing it in realtime. Resistance looks the same as last year, Motorstorm looks good, the F1 and car demo look photorealistic. I wanna play Ratchet and Clank! I really need to see these games at E3 in motion to judge them, but so far, looks like Sony's going to deliver on their promise.

Yes #8 is a dumbass.
He is also comparing REALEASED games to games that ARE IN DEVELOPMENT. Those games have 9 months of polishing before they are ready for release.
Besides everyone allready thinks that the 360 and PS3 will be equal in GPU preformance. What will be the main difference is CPU preformance. Please note the mud physics, as an example, in MotorStorm.

PS3 is 2x more powerful than the 360, it can do 2 TFLOPS rather than just one, if I'm not mistaken (though I very well could be).
Also, the bottlenecking makes it harder to produce anything, at this point, that will be exceptionally better than the 360.

I think the difference between the PS3 and the 360 will show once we compare the games running on each system. Lots of stuff on the 360 runs only at 30fps which sucks. If the same stuff runs on the PS3 at 60fps, that means something. The screens look good, but I think it's how the games will play that matter. I think we're seeing a role reversal that occurred between the PS2/XBOX (both in hardware and their respective fanbase attitude) with the 360/PS3 situation.
As for me? I'd pay the extra bucks for the slight difference in visuals if the games play much smoother. The days of 30fps should have died with the last generation, but so far, we're seeing the same kind of games on the 360 as the XBOX: Games that push the visual limits, but running at a "smooth" 30fps (bleech!). PGR3 is great, now imagine that running at 60fps!

I must admit, that looks freaking sweet, amazing, cool, etc.etc. I am a huge Nintendo Fan, but man, that looks totally awsome. I have never owned anything but nintendo, but I am totally thinking of buying a PS3 if the games look that cool. Sweet Mother of mine!! However I will not spend more than 500.00(and that is still very steep) on a console and not more than 50.00 bucks for that no matter how good they look. oh yeah, and Revolution still rocks...definetely going to buy that.

lol i can here the silence of xbox 360 fans. before this gdc there arugment was pre rendered. now the silence is beautiful.
and even that wont completely silence them, number 8 is having a hard time accepting things.
i respect the 360 a tiny lil bit because of pgr3, so why cant xbox fans respect ps3? its a better console.

Anyway, they look a lot nicer then I expected after some of the negative comments from earlier in the week. Now we've got to see them moving.

First, I am having a fantastic time playing Oblivion. Check it out.
Second, it's becoming more and more obvious that Sony is ready to steal the show once more at this upcoming E3.
Sure, it could be pure hype. Yet, if that's what PS3 is going to deliver, the masses will perceive the 360 as puny in comparison.
So, more waiting...not much more, though...

Keep in mind all of this is for games that are still in development, they have several months before they will be completely polished, so its a bit of a misplaced comparison to compare finished product to stuff still in developement.
It will be a little while before we see the PS3 graphically pull away from the 360. If anything is a test of a systems capabilities it will be whatever comes out of Polyphony studios (makers of gran turismo). They did things with the ps2 graphically that people thought was impossible. GT4 was so well crafted that it actually managed to graphically rival xbox racers. So to really see what the ps3 can do, wait for the companies that have spent a lot of time developing titles for sony.
I now think the delay was a good idea, it now gives all these games that were shooting for spring the ability to really make sure that the game looks and plays its best.

umm...PGR3 looks better or as good as both those racing games...ratchet and clank looks great however...and the other games look eghh...these wudve impressed me last year...but after seeing FNR3 , GRAW ,oblivion , pg3 etc...these dont look that hot by comparison...but its still early so who knows...of course the sony fans are going to over hype these decent graphics..and the 360 boys will underrate them...but i think they're relatively unimpressive ( sans ratchet and clank) at this point...

Very nice to finally see these games in action, even if they are some demos of the engine.
The interface looks very slick and clean, which I am digging since I have a penchant for the sleak and sexy.
I am very impressed with how the F1 game looks as well as Warhawk. I know a lot of the environment was shown off in Wahawk, but it looks very very slick. I'm excited they are finally expanding the franchise.
If the final Ratchet game looks like that... I'll be very impressed.
Very exciting, considering this isn't even running on final hardware and there is still another 6 months + of development.

The only screens that said "huh, wonder if the 360 can do this" to me were the first set of car ones (the damage on the cars). Beyond that, pretty, sure, but not beyond anythign I've seen in the 360 games I have.
Which is GOOD. It's great to see developers settling into gear to develop for the PS3. I'm sure we'll only see better and better games in the coming months (from all systems).

Playing Oblivion here as well, it looks pretty good but frame rate on 360 isn't amazing. It's ok, but not smooth.
Can PS3 pull this off, I don't know... maybe well know at e3. You'd really have to see it in motion to know.

I'm amused that no one has mentioned that the GDC this week basically confirmed what we all knew that the movies of the PS3 last year were pre-renders....Granted these are some nice shots...but they are nothing like those movies of MOTORSTORM or KILLZONE 2. I'm definitely getting my PS3 (praying for a 400$ price tag)....but I am loving my XBOX 360....such good games lately like GRAW, FIGHT NIGHT 3, and next week BATTLEFIELD 2. If you're a true gamer.... you should already have a 360 anyway and be and saving up for both of your PS3 and REVOLUTION purchases.

1) These aren't high-res shots. I read people saying "bye bye jaggies" responding to these shots, and that still might not be true. You can't tell, because A) They're running on a projector, which already kills the image quality, and B) The photos themselves are fuzzy.
And actually, if you'll turn your attention to the spoiler on the F1 car, you can STILL see jaggies through all that.
2) Sony has a history for bullshit.
3) Do you see the man on-stage holding a controller? No? Who's to say this is gameplay footage?
WAIT FOR E3 BEFORE YOUR FINAL DECISION.
If PS3 costs any more than $500, then it's not worth it. Not to mention that it's running Blu-Ray, so most, if not all, of the games will cost upwards of $70.
If you read ANYTHING about Blu-Ray, you'd know that Blu-Ray drives and discs are REALLY expensive to make, especially in comparison to DVD, and since we're in the HD era, games ALSO cost alot more to make (Xbox 360 games = $60), so you better expect $70 titles.

BTW, Blu-ray discs only cost about ten cents more than dvds to manufacture, and the retail price for BD-rom movies is a little under $24. Do your research before you start typing. =]

Really cant judge these games and the PS3 based on these pictures because the quality of the pictures are not that good. Also comparing these low resolution pictures of unfinished games to finished games in high-def is kind of unfair. Best way to judge these games is to see it in motion because sometimes screen shots makes the game look worse. That myth was debunked long ago, but is still perpetuated because it used to be the last remaining argument HD-DVD had going for it. Its just not true though.

It's not a myth. Any new media that's just starting out see's a huge development cost jump. In a few years it may level out to be around the same as DVD, but right now it's costing them a ton to create.

Am I excited for the PS3? A bit, but not much more until I see a few of their improvements (interface, controller, etc.) to be finalized at E3 (hopefully). For now, my 360 gets me by just fine.
To be completely honest, I'm not expecting Sony to pull off twice the power of the 360. To me, that's too far a step for Sony to accomplish at this point. However, none of us know how any of this even RUNS. Judging by those who do know, however, we can assume the PS3 and 360 will be running at or around the same level (developer's statements of the 360 being able to run the games in production now).

Otherwise, we will have to what until some real playable demos hit E3 to decide whether the PS3 will really be able to back up Sony's claims... And at what price.

You know whats pathetic. Playstation 3 developers have had final development kits for what? 1 month? Xbox 360 LAUNCHED 1 month after the final development kits arrived. Look at how good PGR3 and Call of Duty 2 looked and after 7 months look at how good GRAW and Oblivion look. PS3 launch games will look like GRAW and Oblivion (AKA better than Xbox 360 launch games) because they have more development time on final dev kits than Xbox 360 devs had.
Another perspective is that The game graphics will look the same on Xbox 360 and PS3. PS3 has a revised edition of the G70 (Nvidia 7800 GTX) Graphics card to fit with the Cell processor in a closed environment while Xbox 360 GPU is comparable with the ATI X1900
both cards produce nearly the same quality.
Nomatter how powerful the CPU is, the quality of graphics are determined by the Graphics card and if the graphics cards are the same in performance wise how can there be a difference in texture and pixel performance in the overall sense?
All a powerful CPU can do is have more stuff on the screen at the same time. Like if an Xbox 360 game has 1,000 flies flying around the screen, the PS3 game will have 1500-2000 flies flying around the screen (IF THE SPE's are used to the full potential which both Valve and ID software said will be impossible until the last generation of PS3 games)
So this absurd fanboyism of how good the game looks is absurd especially considering the factors i have stated above.
If you guys havent thought of the factors above either you are mentally incapable or have biased opinion.

Jesus there are a lot of fanboys in here. I havent seen anything in these pics that cant be done on the 360. It has been said by John Carmack and other developers including the guy that got fired for saying so that the ps3 isnt really that superior to the 360. They are about the same. If the professionals that deal with the hardware personally cant see a big difference between the two then how can you dipsh$ts see it. Enough said. Quit whining, if you love Sony so much spend 500+ on the thing when it comes out and shut up for the rest of us.

I get a kick out of people saying "this looks better than that or that is obviously better than this." These screenshots are way to piss poor to be judging quality compared to games that are already out and playable. And you can't possibly take all of these screens for gameplay screens, we don't know the context of the screen we are looking at, so how can you judge it?
When Sony finally wants US to see them in their TRUE glory and context, let the personal preference rants proceed...beauty is in the eye of the beholder after all.
Other than that, these screens do look VERY promising for PS3-- I'm drooling. The colors from the Ratchet and Clank pics, and the F1 screens struck me the most. Damn I can't wait!!:)

We all know the 360 and PS3 will be almost the same in graphics.
These games look like stuff the 360... I mean Vehicle Dynamics' car look like PGR2's cars and the Getaway(atleast from these fuxxy pics) look almost as good as PGR3's cites. WarHawk's sky and water effects lool on par with Farcry's stuff(F1/Interfaz looks simmilar to PGR3 too). Resistance looks like any other shooter should look on the 360 or PS3. Ratchet & Clank
is the only one a can't draw a 360 to, but I think the 360 can do that easily.

Time for a little reality check.
This is IBM's analysis of the cell, take a look:

Point 1:
Look at Table 2. Okay, while performing 'single precision matrix multiplication' the cell achieved ~25 Gigaflops/SPU * 8 SPUs gives us Sony's 200 Gigaflops spec for the cell. But wait, Sony is disabling one SPU so the PS3 cell only starts with 175 Gigaflops not 200. Oh, and everybody knows that all game code is made up primarily of simple 'single precision matrix multiplication' and the cpu rarely has to execute complex mathematics for physics, AI, wireframes, particle effects etc.
Point 2:
Take a peek at Table 9. While performing 'double precision floating point linpack' the cell achieved 9.46 Gigaflops versus 7.2 Gigaflops for the 3.6Ghz P4 processor. Let's look a little closer, according to table 8, the 9.46 Gigaflops is for all eight SPUs and we all know the PS3 is only using 7 SPUs so the comparison is really 8.51 Gigaflops for the PS3 cell vs 7.2 Gigaflops for the 3.6Ghz P4 or about 18% faster, okay performance I guess... Hey wait a second, didn't Intel release the 3.6Ghz P4 about 2 years ago? Gee, I wonder how it would stack up against todays dual core processors from Intel and AMD...
Well the RSX will probably more than make up for the processor...
Point 3:
Well, we all know the RSX is a slightly overclocked 7800 GTX and... hold on...

Oh my god! The 7800 GTX has been around since June 21st of last year! It's not new technology at all!
To conclude, by the time the ps3 releases it will have a cpu comparable to one that is three years old and a gpu that is 2 years old.
You want next gen games, stick with the pc. Gaming with DX10 will truly impress.

The Resistance demo is useing code created back in december, so the final game running on final hardware will look much better than those pics.

I'm not sure I follow your point DocEvil. Comparing consoles to PC's is apples to oranges. Console tech will never be onpar with the latest PC's, everyone knows that. (quad SLI anyone?)
When everyone uses the term "next gen" they are referring to consoles. There is no next gen with PC's simply because they are always evolving.
Furthermore, usually when a technology comparison is made most people compare the PS3 to the 360 to the Revolution because PC gaming is an entirely different entity.
Simply put, consoles come out and say "we have better tech than the pc's of today"...then tomorrow roles around and the pc gamer says "yea well, tech just advanced, now we can do more than you again"...5 years later the cycle continues.
Now, if you tore a hole in the PS3's specs using a 360 as a comparison, I'd be interested.

DocEvil - you haven't a clue what you're talking about. Just..stop posting.
Curt - most developers I've talked to appreciate there is a more significant gap in CPU capability on the systems, versus overall. The gap in GPU power isn't that big, RSX and Xenos have a couple of different advantages over one another. PS3's difference will be in the CPU, things that rely on the CPU. The difference is also wider than simple floating point figures would suggest, for the kinds of things it'll be doing mostly, and I think that shows in the GDC stuff. The stuff shown there was a lot more sophisticated in terms of physics and simulation than stuff we've seen on 360 sofar.
Hasan Ahmad - you'll have to trust me on this, but both the AGEIA and Havok libraries can handle a lot more on PS3 currently than on 360. It's not just a 2x difference, particularly for effects-only entities. The memory architecture in Cell is such that the difference is exaggerated well beyond the 2x difference in FP power on paper, particularly for things like particles, fluids, smoke, cloth etc. Ditto for some of the dynamics shown in some of these demos - with geometry deformation in the vehicle dynamics demo and track deformation in Motorstorm. PS3 can just do a crapload more with geometry processing on Cell.
Another thing Cell is just a lot better for is the kind of cloud-rendering they're doing in Warhawk - you could do approximations and hackier implementations on 360, but to do it exactly as is being done in Warhawk would occupy way too much CPU time versus PS3. It's feasible to spend that kind of power on stuff like that on PS3 because the required amount is a smaller proportion of the budget.
In brief - initially, at least, look for the difference in PS3 games to be in things like dynamics, and behaviour and physics. Though, to be honest, I just know some crazyily ambitious devs are going to start cracking open Cell for some ridiculous mixed rendering between RSX and Cell, and that may well push PS3 well beyond 360 just in terms of graphics also in some titles.
