Yes, because the earth is indestructable and there's nothing we humans could possibly do to effect it negatively.

Al Gore is a bit of a nut,
but everything he says about global warming does have a pretty strong basis.

and it's not about extreme action just yet, it's about moderation, earth is self rejuvenating, as long as we don't kill it faster than it can fix it's self things will get better. Just because the guy next to you doesn't care about having a place for his kids to grow up doesn't mean you should.

The earth is just a series of ecosystems, and if you weren't aware, humans are very capable of effecting every type, and eventually destroying them.

Name calling isn't necessary. We need to come together as a species and look past our wallets ans short-term comfort and confront the all environmental that our short-sightedness has caused. We have put a hole in the ozone layer, the thousands of acres of forest have been destroyed and many species have gone extinct directly because of our actions. I don't think that I'm being a liberal nutjob by saying that this has to stop.

P.S, getting your political views from someone else (political party, movement leader, South Park, ect) is bad for our planet, bad for our society, and bad for your mind.

Sorry, one more thing. There was a recent report put out by Lawrence Livermore Laboratory that said forests (I forget the exact wording, but basically, non-tropical forests) add to global warming and may be responsible for a 10 degree increase over the next 100 years. I forget all of the particulars, but you can look it up yourselves, I'm too lazy right now. But those guys at the Lawrence Livermore Lab must qualify as "respected scientist(s)". @your left nut
Sure there are those who disagree, but 99% agree that although Gore's predictions are an overestimate, Global Warming is a legitimate threat to our planet. (and the despicable partisan hacks that make up most of the U.S's press want to sensationalize every story they can)

Rising temperatures are an empirical fact at this point, weather or not we are directly responsible is the question, and the majority of the scientific community says that yes, we are.

Rising CO2 levels are unquestionably our fault (unless we haven't noticed some extra volcanoes erupting recently) and that in itself is causing major damage to our oceans even without the warming.

Our planet is very resilient, short of nuking every square inch of it's surface there is nothing that we can do to erradicate its life. But if current trends continue, we may not like the earth that emerges from the ashes of our actions.

Where's the proof that global warming is bad? The dinosaurs went extinct because CO2 levels lowered killing off plants which killed off O2 which killed them. Therefore global warming could be a good thing and actually help generate more life.

Just that that was a tad bit interesting. Anyway, sure the globe is warming but is it due to this "global warming" that Gore speaks of? I'm not saying we shouldn't work on reducing the emissions that we put into the environment, but lots of these "scientists" urge drastic economic changes that are uncalled for.

We have good points, and you have good points. Stifling debate and arrogantly dismissing sceptical scientists - of which there are many, such as Tim Ball, Fred Singer, Robert Carter, William Gray, Frederick Seitz, Sallie Baliunas, Willie Soon, Roy Spencer, Richard Lindzen and David Deming, to name a few - only casts further doubt on your side.

@ Damian G.

It is fine to have a dissenting opinion as long as it is based on some kind of reasonable evidence and not partisan divisions or "liberal conspiracy" theories. There is no real scientific debate about global warming anywhere because there is a near universal scientific consensus about global warming in relation to anthropogenic release of greenhouse gases. Many of the "scientists" who tried to cast doubt on the issue in the mainstream media had a conflict of interest or weren't qualified to report on the issue. Take a university science class today or read peer-reviewed scientific journals and you'll see that there is no credible doubt about human induced climate change in looking at the evidence.

Listing off names does not create a dissenting position. Look at the people you named:

Fred Singer: http://environment.guardian.co.uk/climatechange/story/0,,1875762,00.html

Tim Ball:
http://www.kantor.com/2007/02/05/timothy-ball-opinion-without-evidence/

Robert Carter:
http://www.smh.com.au/news/environment/minchin-denies-climate-change-manmade/2007/03/14/1173722560417.html

I picked those four at random and each one of them has questionable academic authority or significant conflicts of interest in reporting on global warming. Deny the scientific body of evidence all you want, but don't try to pretend that there's a credible argument against it lying with these sham authorities and professors.

"Politics shouldn't be on Joystiq. =D"

What's really sad is that global warming shouldn't be considered 'politics'.
...but to these right wing half-wits, it is...because it's part of some big "liberal" conspiracy to...destroy capitalism?
It's EVER so frightening when you that that this is the line of thinking that is currently in charge of the White house today.

"Honestly, I wish that those of us with dissenting opinions on the issue weren't treated as pariahs."

You're treated as "pariahs" because you have no reason to continue believing what you do, in light of all the science. You don't deserve respect on this issue, to be honest. Just like people who say the Earth is only 6000 years old don't deserve respect.
You DON'T have any good points. The doubt that is cast upon global warming is EXACTLY akin to the cigarette debate of the 60's and 70's. No, we didn't know EXACTLY why or how carcinogens in cigarettes caused cancer (and we STILL don't know 100% today!), but we WERE sure that they caused it.
But the cigarette companies seized that one GRAIN of doubt and managed to convince countless people that cigarettes were healthy.
...all because, in the back of their minds, they didn't want to admit that cigarettes caused cancer.
Just like today, these extremist, irrational Republicans don't want to admit that global warming is happening, courtesy of mankind.

To the few morons who said Al Gore is a hypocrite for various reasons.......GO LEARN SOME FUCKING FACTS, YOU SHIT HEADS. I'm sick and tired of seeing Fox "News" propaganda about Gore repeated everywhere.

As for the rest of you right-wing snakes better get over this illogical hatred of "lib'ruls" quick and admit that this is happening before it's too late. Considering that everything these dumbasses have ever said, especially about climate change, is wrong, they don't have much room for error.

Not that it matters. Gore'll probably run for President later this year and he'll easily win both the primary and the general.
