Midway expects Unreal Tournament PS3 to slip into '08
If you were picturing Darth Vader's infamously prolonged "No!" in response to this news, we'll improve your mental image by replacing the overacting villain with another shiny black object -- the PlayStation 3. In a financial update released today, Unreal Tournament III publisher Midway stated that its annual estimates have been revised due to "the expected movement of Unreal Tournament 3 for the PLAYSTATION 3 system into the first quarter of fiscal 2008." Conveniently and refreshingly, Midway's 2008 fiscal year begins in 2008. Also, unfortunately.
With fans already assaulting the forums of developer Epic Games, company VP Mark Rein has once again posted one of his noncommittal assurances. "As a public company, Midway felt an obligation to its shareholders to let them know about the possibility of a delay," said Rein. "But our goal is still to get the PS3 version of UT3 in stores before the end of 2007. However, we will only ship it once it's ready and is the best game we can deliver." See if you can extract any optimism from that, at least enough to cover what could become a fairly unsightly hole in the PS3's holiday lineup.
PC owners will be glad to learn that their version(s) of the frenetic first-person shooter is still due for a November release.

oh goody, it's not delayed for PC. that title had me worried there! i had to read to the bottom of the post
Marty @ Oct 2nd 2007 7:31PM
Yeah, I am happy it's not delayed for the PC.
Seems the only thing that hasn't been delayed for the PS3 so far is the hype. :D

On topic, I am all for a delay to get the game right.

Suprised? Nope.
Disappointed? Yeah.
Partially relieved? Yeah. Seriously, I would have to buy Draks Fortune, SMG, Rock Band, and Haze as well as two copies of UTIII. Why two copies? One for the PC with the toolset, one for the PS3 where I plan to enjoy my mods.

Actually, the speed of the PS3's Blu-ray drive and the 360's DVD drive are pretty-much the same. The Xbox 360 DVD drive can only read single-layer DVDs at 12x speed. For dual-layered disk (which most, if not all, 360 games are on now), the 360 can only read them at 8x speed. Also, the speed that the 360 reads DVDs is less consistent than Blu-Ray, so the speed of the disk varies with 8x as the top speed (with the outer-ring areas of the disk getting the fastest speeds). In terms of the calculations, this how the speeds compare:
Blu-ray 2x: 72Mbps / 9MBps
DVD 8x: 44 - 88Mbps / 5.5 - 11MBps
If you average things out, their speeds are pretty-much equal.
TheGuy @ Oct 2nd 2007 10:58PM
oops. sorry wrong post
Josh Warner @ Oct 2nd 2007 7:04PM
Now - why would a game like this have to be delayed for a system so incredibly powerful (for the innuendo-impaired; beware, sarcasm may be present)? Maybe they are still figuring out how to duplicate one DVD9's worth of data all over 25 GB of space so the 2x drive in the PS3 can have manageable load times? I hear that can be difficult.
Seriously, this goes toward proving the PS3's inferiority w.r.t. the PC. The game is essentially done for PC, and yet they can't get it to run on the PS3 - even with all of Sony's dev tools. I am not a huge fanboy of any system, but MS's XNA Studio has to be looking pretty nice for developers about now (got a game done for the 360? Great! Let's bring it out for PC - with very little extra effort!).
Flame away ignorant Sony fanboien.
Noshino @ Oct 2nd 2007 7:15PM
you have 2 classes, one in which you had already been on for a year and the other one is new, you are told to make a project for each class, and for the newest class, altho you are not really familiar with that class, you are given a lot of data to help you out.....now which project is easier and faster?
Exactly :]
sheppy2.0 @ Oct 2nd 2007 7:17PM
Well, if I must...
Your knowledge of XNA and it's applications are quite hilarious. Do you REALLY think the first step is Xbox 360 for XNA hobbyist? And I say hobbyist because a vast majority of the production studios do NOT use XNA. The API itself tends to clog code like Dreamweaver does to HTML. It's good as a first step but definately has issues on the larger projects.
I'd also say this has more inline with three issues. This first being that Epic is still, in fact, a small company and majority of their resources go towards UE3. The second is naturally because PS3, while utilizing an NVidia chipset and thus .dds textures, that's where the comparisons end. PS3 cannot take advantage of Direct X to my knowledge and is drastically hampered by it's inability to utilize DX10. And finally, the effort still remains on the PC version simply because that's where majority of their market resides and unlike the PS3 version, they have to get EVERYTHING up and running. The game, the toolkit, the API, everything. Unreal Tournament has always been a game editor built in on PC and that does take a HELL of a lot of work. These are likely our culprits. If I had to choose between the PC version or the PS3 to come out first, guess which I'd choose?
Flying Spaghetti Monster @ Oct 2nd 2007 7:30PM
Listen up you ignorant fool. The 2x's Blu-ray drive is faster than a DVD9. The top read speed of a SINGLE layer DVD is faster than the Blu-ray. However, since only 13% or so of the disc is read at that speed, the top speed is irrelevant. And since 99% or 360 games are on dual layer dvd's....that top speed is non existant.
The constant read speed of the Blu-ray drive is overall faster than the average speed of a DVD9.
Eric @ Oct 2nd 2007 8:23PM
But the speed that 360 games come out is faster than the ps3...:p
Anonim @ Oct 2nd 2007 9:29PM
@Spagetti
YOU are ignorant and FUD spreading ****.
Blu-ray is slower than DVD in X360
http://www.emedialive.com/articles/readarticle.aspx?articleid=11404
BRx2 IS EQUAL TO 6.5 DVD speed!
DVD in X360 is 12xDVD for Dual Layer DVDs and SL-DVD (actually it is 16xDVD with firmware limiter to 12x for all discs so it can read DL-DVD at 12x speed)
*Also Bluray has VERY SLOW access time*
DVD ~110ms
2xBlu-ray >350ms (similar to 2xHD DVD)
Anonim @ Oct 2nd 2007 9:32PM
Also ***ALL*** games no matter how small (even 100kb games would be on DL-DVD) on X360 are on dual layer discs - security sectors are on second layer.
sheppy2.0 @ Oct 2nd 2007 9:41PM
On one hand, PS3's BluRay is slower than 360's DVD drive. But on the other, PS3 can install games like Ridge Racer 7 to almost completely removed loading times. Just depends on the developer and how their willing to work around the system instead of copypasta and praying everything works well enough to shift copies.
Anonim @ Oct 2nd 2007 9:50PM
@sheppy2.0
You are absolutely right.
Due to slow Bluray, HDDs are in all PS3.
BR drive in PS3 also spins slower = less noise and no scratched discs.
And I prefer it over MS solution....
ukickmydog (NDF - Earth) @ Oct 2nd 2007 10:35PM
Sheppy, stop trying to justify your wasted money, BRD is in fact slower, and you keep on bringing up XNA and what not, take a look at Gears, then think (for once) and see that ps3 = fail for unreal engine
Matt B @ Oct 2nd 2007 10:38PM
Anonim agrees with Sheppy?!?
*Head asplodes*
I'd take quieter over a second of read time anyday personally.

sheppy2.0 @ Oct 3rd 2007 12:14AM
ulickmydog, very clever. Trying to justify wasted money....
Actually, that's sort of accurate. You see, I wasted money on the 360 version of Bioshock instead of the PC version because I didn't want to have to worry about the system being able to play it 10+ years down the road. Jokes on me though, since my 360 died halfway through the game. Likewise, preordered Halo 3 and got to pick up my copy... to sit on a shelf. But hey, those Halo Actionclix I got as a bonus are the dogs bollocks, huh? And just think, as my machine is off for repair for the FIFTH FUCKING TIME, my Live membership is tick, tick, ticking away. But hey, they'll give me a free month for the two the machine is gone and when all is said and done, I've paid for six months of the service I'll never be able to use.
I mean, when I think of wasted money, it sure as hell isn't PS3. I go out, I buy game, I take game home, I play. Doesn't always seem to work that way on 360.
ukickmydog (NDF - Earth) @ Oct 3rd 2007 12:16AM
good job changing the subject, maybe next time you can keep on the same one =(
sheppy2.0 @ Oct 3rd 2007 8:17AM
I'm beginning to think your avatar is the only smart thing about you. Fine.
A. BluRay is slower than DVD. I admitted this. Where did I deny it? Is your ability to read this out of whack?
B. I did not mention XNA. Someone else did as evidence that 360 to PC ports are made better by XNA. Meanwhile, XNA is more of a hobbyists tool. It has dick all to do with UE3 and it's application.
C. Unreal Engine fail on PS3, huh? So THAT's why many games are getting delayed. Couldn't have anything to do with programming for three processors and 7 support systems. Nor could it have anything to do with the advanced techniques needed to properly utilize the oddball ram of the PS3. Nor anything to do with the fact that, except for UT3, all those other games had 360 as their lead console and plugging in code haphazardly is how you end up with F.E.A.R. Nope, it's that pesky UE3.
Just do me a favor, seriously. Don't talk to me, don't look at me, don't even think of me. Your ignorance is SOOO bad it now looks like you're reached Super Dumbass Lv12. Your hair has gone all blond and your moron points are off the scale. So just flutter away, little moth.
baby sea tuna @ Oct 3rd 2007 9:03AM
Sheppy, PLEASE just sell your 360 when you get it back so we never have to hear about it again...and again, and again...
PS. I'm sorry but at this point, with additional heatsinks and whatnot, if you're on your 5th 360, you're doing something wrong.
ukickmydog (NDF - Earth) @ Oct 3rd 2007 10:22AM
holy shit man, calm the hell down, lol
go take some fucking midol, that might help...
...or maybe some cyanide

I want PS3 to be successful, and I fear that all these delays are hurting its image!

Weclome to the DelayStation 3..... This is Missing..out.
Erwos @ Oct 2nd 2007 7:12PM
This was obviously coming. Who really thought Epic would actually have a harder time porting to the 360 than the PS3?
Spitkicker @ Oct 2nd 2007 7:49PM
Ha ha. I needed that laugh. All the SONY fanboys have to eat their words...Oh UT3 is an exclusive this year!! PS3 owns all...okay, now I that I am done flaming...
Sorry to hear that SONY fans (not fanboys) I know this game would really help you guys pass the time this year. Still you always have Haze which does look interesting.
severian00 @ Oct 2nd 2007 8:01PM
Who would of thought a PS3 game would be delayed. How much you want to bet that Sony tries to spin this as before it was said the only place you could play Unreal this year was on the PC and PS3. Now just the PC. They can't even say that next year the PS3 will be the only console you can play it on because Epic already said the 360 version would be coming out in the 2 qrtr of 08. Well Sony Fanboys, at least you have Uncharted and Ratchet to hang your hats on.
blooh (CDF - Ass Ring) @ Oct 2nd 2007 8:18PM
yeah, i wish they ported uncharted and ratchet to 360, then i'd get to play them :(
naughty dog and insomniac are great companies, i wish they weren't sony exclusive
JJ Rooster @ Oct 2nd 2007 8:18PM
SDF spin: This just means 2008 will be Sony's year!!!
Man, I LOL'd at this news, but it's getting old. Those poor PS3 owners are grasping at straws for something to boast about, and news like this keeps delaying my interest in purchasing a unit.
ukickmydog (NDF - Earth) @ Oct 2nd 2007 10:30PM
lol, i'd be grabbing at any good news if i just dropped $600 on a dvd player too
Markster @ Oct 2nd 2007 8:53PM
Good thing they stopped calling it "Unreal Tournament 2007"
DjDATZ @ Oct 31st 2007 8:21PM
AHAHHAHAHAHHAHA...yea...i think that was the main reason...because they couldn't call it UT2007 if it was released in 2008. then it would just feel like an old game...
Ska Oreo @ Oct 2nd 2007 9:59PM
Can somebody say simultaneous release? I wouldn't be surprised if it happens.
But here's what I don't get. Why is it every time UT3 comes out, ps3fanboys brag about it like it's their Halo and yet at the same time they continually bash the 360 for having too many shooters. What's up with that?
GWolf @ Oct 2nd 2007 10:19PM
I call it Fan boys selective reasoning disease. It destroys the connections between the left and right halves of the brain.
ukickmydog (NDF - Earth) @ Oct 2nd 2007 10:33PM
i dunno, imo, shooters on the ps3 have generally sucked, mostly because of the freaking joystick config on the dualshock, if they fixed that, UT3 might actually have been enjoyable, now, it's definitely a PC purchase
Clack @ Oct 2nd 2007 11:21PM
Doesn't matter really. At the end of the generation, when all the smoke clears, the Wii will be the top dog for FPS games (as well as several other genres previously only worthwhile on a PC, like RTS).
OTAM @ Oct 2nd 2007 10:03PM
Oh for crying out loud. Why the fuck do I even own this system?
Ska Oreo @ Oct 2nd 2007 10:12PM
Because Kojima and Hirai will gangrape you if you sell your ps3.
Matt B @ Oct 2nd 2007 10:56PM
Umm... are you serious? GO rent Heavenly Sword, Motorstorm, Resistance, Lair....anything!!!! You have one game but won't get Warhawk for some reason. It's like a wii owner and not getting MP3 or Zelda. Ya, I went there.
By your Pic and comment history, you own a 360 and cherish it much. That is ok but don't slam the PS3 is you haven't partaken in all its majesty.
