Capcom reveals mediocre Devil May Cry 4 special edition
What lurks inside is barely adequate, but Capcom has announced the contents of the Devil May Cry 4 Collector's Edition. A far cry from the cat helmets and Big Daddies we've come to expect from these sorts of compilations, this collection's highlight will be a DVD containing the first four episodes of ADV Film's Devil May Cry: The Animated Series.
A second DVD, designed to be slipped into your computer, will also be included, and will feature a "making of" video, the DMC4 soundtrack, as well as icons, screen savers, and wallpapers. Underwhelming, sure, though what we're most disappointed in is that while the powers that be at Capcom decided to include an artbook in the collection, they went the cheap route and simply stamped the eye candy digitally onto a DVD.
All of this will of course come stuffed inside a metal case, and while we enjoy shiny tin boxes as much as anyone, Capcom's gall to ask $80, some $20 more than the regular edition's asking price, for this lackluster montage is enough to make even our jaded heads shake in amazement. The special edition will ship for both the PS3 and Xbox 360 alongside the regular editions on February 5, 2008.

Ok. Whatever.
When do we get Bionic Commando. That is the important question!
Dan @ Nov 5th 2007 4:35PM
You can only do 'special editions' of games people actually give a sh1t about.
Halo3 = popular enough for people to throw away extra cash on a toy helmet and some pictures that are probably available on the net for free.
Devil may cry = more like marketing dept will cry, when they get fired because hardly anyone cared about the game and even less people bought the stupid special edition.
NoHitHair @ Nov 5th 2007 5:11PM
I can't believe the Devil May Cry series is still continuing. Add two parts stale one-dimensional characters, 4 sticks of big guns and fancy swords, a carton of remarkably bland backgrounds and areas and pepper throughout with random unplayable action scenes that provide the main distraction from what's otherwise a mindless hack-and-slash.
Square already jumped headlong with this recipe with Advent Children. The previews of FFXIII seem to prove the days of thoughtful character building and intricate storytelling falter when pitted against spiked hair and a smug smile. I wonder when we'll get to have our Uematsu-style melodies replaced with generic screamo metal. God I can't wait.
The3rdNuisance @ Nov 5th 2007 3:05PM
Still better than Enemy Territory: Quake Wars' collectors set. They included a whole extra DVD for about 50 megabytes of pictures, a 100 megabyte fansite kit, and LINKS to ringtones. For gods sake, LINKS. However, the little cards and the map book make it almost worth it.
Eitherway, if it wasn't $80, I'd consider getting the CE... The fact its got the cartoon and the "making of" videos still make it a convincing argument.

ok look!!! u people are being really stupid ranking this down!!!! if u have ever watched the anime in japanese u would realize how awesome it is!! plus u get the whole soundtrack wich i planned on spending 30 bucks to buy anyway!! plus u get all the art and wallpapers etc!!! im actually saving myself 20 or so bucks buying this cuz i would have bought all this extras myself anyway!!! go capcom!!!! my only dissapointment is that i wish i could get the whole 12 episodes of the anime, not just 4, but u know, dmc 4, 4 episodes, im still getting it cuz it rocks!!!!
The3rdNuisance @ Dec 12th 2007 6:24PM
Where in my comment did I rank this down? Holy crap, I got a response from a month old comment...
Anyway, I said its almost worth it. Honestly, if I cared that much about the anime, I'd of bought them, and download a version with subtitles if necessary.
Honestly, the only thing I said was negative was Enemy Territory Quake Wars' collectors edition, which was, crap.
Nathan Graves @ Nov 5th 2007 3:10PM
Even the Special Editon of Halo 3 is better than this D:
deaftly @ Nov 5th 2007 3:14PM
ZOMGZ xbox 360 exclusive!!!1
Trev @ Nov 5th 2007 3:48PM
I don't know wtf is up with that. I'd assume they are only digital mock-ups of the boxes and they just had the stock border image with the "only on 360" tag on it. Still surprised it didn't get removed since they put together an image with the fake 360 box in the post and the fake ps3 box side by side.
Or maybe they mean 360 version is only on 360... I guess that makes sense.
Sam @ Nov 5th 2007 3:18PM
Its Devil May Cry 4.
Any edition is ten times more special to me than any other game on the horizon.
Blue_Falcon @ Nov 5th 2007 3:18PM
Of note is that the DMC Anime would be priced at $29.99 on its own.
So when you slice it like that, it's not a bad deal. Now the question is if the Anime is good enough at $30 for 4 episodes.
Cruxis @ Nov 5th 2007 3:23PM
that box art looks pretty cheap, here's to hoping it's not final
elpmis @ Nov 5th 2007 3:34PM
I'd pay $80 bucks if I could get it today
zuburi @ Nov 5th 2007 3:39PM
I always find "making of..." bonus discs to be incredibly boring. I can only take so much of looking at wireframe models and concept art before monotony sets in.
baby sea tuna @ Nov 5th 2007 3:41PM
Good fucking luck if you expect people to pay 80 bucks for that. And this is coming from a cat-helmet owner.
jax sedrin @ Nov 5th 2007 3:43PM
Only two things interest me when it comes to collector's/special/limited editions on games:
1) bonus game content (maps, characters, armor, weapons, etc.)
2) additional information and insight into the fictional universe of that game
Anything else, including (but not limited to) behind-the-scenes/making-of videos/interviews/diaries, trailers, themes/wallpapers, gamerpics, pc software, links to stuff on the internet, website fankits, FIGURINES, and metal cases... are completely worthless, as far as I'm concerned.
W3sk3r @ Nov 5th 2007 3:47PM
And you call that a "disappointment" ?
I remember when I received my Splinter cell Double Agent Special Edition (Or limited, or whatever) with a mighty tin case, and... NOTHING!... just the common green plastic case inside the tin one. That was all.
Rob Accomando @ Nov 5th 2007 3:52PM
Just give me the game without any extra BS. That's enough for me.
ark_v2 @ Nov 5th 2007 3:54PM
Mediocre? All that stuff for $20 extra sounds like one hell of a deal for me. Even the soundtrack is included!
NukeAssault @ Nov 5th 2007 3:59PM
Srsly wth is wrong with you people and i like the box art.
NukeAssault @ Nov 5th 2007 4:01PM
Oh and the price is a bitch though.
waynski1457 @ Nov 5th 2007 5:24PM
@ark_v2: i actually agree with you, this collectors edition isnt bad at all, except for the price ($5 cheaper and its a must for me). and this is coming from a cat helmet owner, lol.
MasterInsan0 @ Nov 5th 2007 4:08PM
I wouldn't be surprised if most publishers stop releasing Special Editions of games, since buyers' expectations are becoming unrealistic. Bungie basically pushed it over the line of ridiculous with the whole "cat helmet" fiasco, and they could do so because they had the massive, unimaginably deep pockets of Bill Gates behind them.
All these stupid Special Editions do anyway is further the notion that video gaming is becoming "interactive Hollywood," with gargantuan, over-the-top budgets and a ridiculous amount of fluff.
I'm not entirely sure why, but the whole mentality of "I'm *only* getting four episodes of an anime, a making-of video, the soundtrack to the game, a media pack, a sturdier case, and an art gallery?! What a rip off!" just pisses me off. It's not the "We Give You Free Shit So You'll Buy Our Game" edition. Hell, the soundtrack alone would probably cost $20 outside of this pack.
baby sea tuna @ Nov 5th 2007 4:18PM
Of course it sounds like a "deal." But that's only because people who buy anime and Japanese video game soundtracks have become accustomed to paying retarded premium prices for their hobby. The VG companies are just starting to find the thresholds for milking their customers.
You are right about something, though, with more and more ridiculous special editions coming out these days, the bubble will eventually burst. It'll probably end up being just like when the bottom fell out of the comics industry in the early '90s. All I can say is, sell your stocks before that happens!
Shockgamer @ Nov 5th 2007 4:34PM
I'm starting to feel like I'm an alien or something. It seems like every next-gen game under the sun is getting a special edition box, yet I haven't in my life ever paid for more than just the normal game. I'm shocked Nintendo hasn't gotten in on it: I imagine they'd kill with some throwaway dolls and art pictures in Mario, Zelda or Pokemon.
Regardless, I wish we just dropped the phrase 'Special Edition' and went for the real name: BOHICA Edition.
xXFenixKnight13Xx @ Nov 5th 2007 4:31PM
Glad this game is coming to 360, that box art sux. Definatley not the final version since it sais
"Only for Xbox 360" on the front lol Ive been watching this one and it looks good. It should be a nice change of pace from all these shooters
Knighthawk @ Nov 5th 2007 4:51PM
Look closely at the picture. On the box at the top it says Only For Xbox 360! Lol, ya it was for PS3 first. Joystiq, you are so BIASED!
Joel @ Nov 5th 2007 6:04PM
That "special edition" dvd reminds me of Perfect Dark Zero's special edition dvd!
Umeadi @ Nov 5th 2007 6:15PM
Am I the only one who feels that DMC on the X-Box is blasphemy?
baby sea tuna @ Nov 6th 2007 9:06AM
Nope, you and 12182 other sandy vaginas who will bitch and moan...and buy it anyway.

Spencer @ Dec 12th 2007 11:47AM
oh and i agree with Umeadi!! it is just stupid to have DMC on the xbox!! its rediculous!!!
LaughingTarget @ Nov 5th 2007 6:21PM
Please stop charging extra for lame "Making Of" videos. They aren't interesting free.
OniBLU @ Nov 5th 2007 8:22PM
All collectors editions should follow in metal gear solid and bioshock's footsteps. Extremely limited and worth something already. You can go buy the final fantasy XII collectors for 14.99.
gonk @ Nov 5th 2007 8:29PM
i wouldn't even pay $30 for the game. bleh
Dante Sparda @ Nov 5th 2007 11:51PM
Being a big DMC fan I approve of all this content and I went out and paid off the Collectors Edition last week before it was even announced what would be in it. I will pay for it all and enjoy it all. Good deal and kick ass game!
Deprincer @ Nov 6th 2007 12:14AM
Is it just me or does the $80 seem like a decent deal? You're getting the soundtrack, plus 4 episodes of the anime, plus all the other crap and tin box for $20 more. That's a good deal to me. :/
Emophia @ Nov 6th 2007 6:16AM
I don't understand why everybody is complaining, this is a freaking deal...
You get both the first season of the anime, and the OST and a bunch of other extra stuff for only $20 extra...
Seperatly the anime and OST would run you atleast $50 together... (judging by the price of DMC3's OST)...
I'm definetly getting this...
Grendel Pr1me @ Nov 6th 2007 11:15AM
I can't wait for the Special Edition release that as an extra bonus you get a Special Edition packed in.
It will be called the Infinite Loop Edition.
me @ Jan 22nd 2008 6:52PM
I'll buy the Special Edition 2 weeks after release for $60 just like any other Special Edition.... Halo 3 anyone?
