Gamasutra gives a look behind BioShock
Thanks to decades of hard living and abuse of over-the-counter cold medicine, we're just a couple of months away from completely forgetting BioShock and being able to experience it again for the first time. Until then though, we've had to entertain ourselves with pieces like this one from Gamasutra which explores the classy first-person shooter from its roots.
It's a fascinating look at the game's evolution, especially 2K's Alyssa Finley's revelation that the instincts of the team, in many respects, were wrong about how well players would be able to understand the game. It's a reminder that as much as brilliant games are a product of creativity, they're often equally the result of some good old-fashioned elbow grease.

why, this game was average at best. the weapons suck aside from the plasmids. the aiming sucks, and the ai is not that good. despite my dislikes, i didn't mind the game, I just can't figure out why all the critics had such an orgasim over it.

Sounds like you weren't paying attention to the parts that make this game great: atmosphere, story, writing, pacing, dialogue.
Anticrawl @ Nov 7th 2007 8:21PM
The ONLY thing the game got right was atmosphere. Other than that it was a sub-par shooter. There was nothing great about the game other than the gimicy plasmids. Any FPS that found a way to remove all fun from shooting has truely hit a new low that gamers have not experienced since they likes of Pariah.
Gamasutra gives a look behind Bioshock, and behind it you find System Shock 2 with a new coat of paint.

To be honest I didn't like the game. I bought it for the PC and it ran easy on max settings (and on vista) with a DX10 Card (8800GTS). The graphics were great but I couldn't help but to feel like, "Meh...". I wanted to like it but I just couldn't but I am glad people enjoy it that much. All in all if you read my post this far you just wasted your time, sorry.

"All in all if you read my post this far you just wasted your time, sorry."
What about if I've gone through the trouble of replying to it?

Yeah, I'll be honest. It took a lot of time for my love of this game to cool, but it really is mediocre-- gameplay, level-design.. the only thing that saved it was the awesomeness of the plasmids and the customization.
The story, holy hell, was amazing, though.
Anticrawl @ Nov 7th 2007 8:23PM
They story was cool yes, but the gameplay was mediocre. If I wanted a good story I'd read a book, I'm in it for the gameplay. I had to drag myself through it just to beat it, was like a chore to play.

I haven't played Bioshock (my computer can't run it and I don't have a 360), but this article looks really interesting. I wish I didn't have to buy the magazine to read it. Good find, Joystiq; let us know about more articles like this as you come across them!

I agree with other people... Bioshock had a really cool story and an original setting, but when compared to Half Life 2, Bioshock begins to lose its 'classic' status and moves more into the high 80% score range. I don't want that to sound like a criticism because it's not-- it's just that the game didn't have the level of depth that that would have put it into the 90% range for me.
Check out the Zero Punctuation video review which is funny and makes some good points: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xndeZ3UvYg

hey a bioshock thread
I've got a request for PC players, for a screenshot near the end of the game (slight spoiler):
In the last level, in the little sister nursery area, there were a few crayon drawings of big daddies. Can anyone take a screenshot of those for me? I have the 360 version, but those crayon drawings were awesome and I wanna make it my desktop. If you can, please get a big resolution :) fapomatic.com is a good imagehost too, fyi
