NPD to continue providing monthly console sales data
Ladies and gentlemen, our long national nightmare is finally over. After nearly six long days living in mortal terror that NPD would no longer be releasing its monthly console sales reports, we can finally breathe a sigh of relief. GameDaily is reporting that the big three console manufacturers have all signed on to allow the monthly drip of sweet, fanboy-fueling data that has become a morphine-like addiction for the game media. The next drop of data is set to drip this Thursday, Nov. 15, easing the pain for just a little longer. For those of you who just can't wait that long for your fix, try to ease the cravings with some predictions from Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter. Oh, precious data ... never scare us like that again.

Is it me, or has joystiq writers taken a turn for the sarcastic recently? Not just this story, but many others as well.
Clack @ Nov 12th 2007 2:12PM
I think they're trying to be funnier, since Ludwig has built up his cult of followers on his humor.
Slaziman @ Nov 12th 2007 2:26PM
Ludwig is legendary
samfish @ Nov 12th 2007 2:27PM
We're not a cult! Just because we sacrificed Blake Snow and Vlad Cole and had a blood orgy doesn't make The Disciples Of Ludwig a cult, Ludwig damnit!
...Chris Grant is next.
Rubang B (BRUSH WITH FAME) @ Nov 12th 2007 3:44PM
I can't believe you guys ate Vlad without me. Well I'm starting the Justin McElroy cult without you. We're kicking things off via eating his Griffin.
hvnlysoldr @ Nov 12th 2007 3:53PM
I don't know Rubang... I mean he did fusion dance with Peter Griffon and that show came back from the grave. Plus he's been on watch for losing his job, or have you ignored the podcasts?
Rubang B (BRUSH WITH FAME) @ Nov 12th 2007 3:56PM
I skipped the last one. I'll go update myself now.
Rubang B (BRUSH WITH FAME) @ Nov 12th 2007 5:25PM
I just listened to the podcast, and still have no idea what you're talking about.
Donald @ Nov 12th 2007 2:02PM
Surprised that (insert manufacturer here) signed on because they're afraid of (insert bad news for the system here).
elmersglue @ Nov 12th 2007 2:04PM
it'll also look bad if they didn't sign on, they pretty much had to if everyone else was.
Cyro @ Nov 12th 2007 2:18PM
Are talking about Sony??
*Smiles with sarcasm*
samfish @ Nov 12th 2007 2:29PM
The real question is, which one of them is going to stop releasing their numbers first?
Avarice @ Nov 12th 2007 2:06PM
Too little, too late NPD. I've moved on tracking bigger and better industry sales reports.
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Nov 12th 2007 2:18PM
I don't think they're giving you an option...
Shockgamer @ Nov 12th 2007 2:06PM
Information and Truth prevails. VGChartz am cry.
Bring on the meltdowns, gloating and damage control!!
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Nov 12th 2007 2:08PM
And Spin. Don't forget the spin.
Clack @ Nov 12th 2007 4:36PM
What, you prefer real numbers over figures some kid comes up with by measuring the decibels of his game-fuel mountain dew farts?
samfish @ Nov 12th 2007 2:08PM
OH THANK GOD. OH THANK GOD!!!
F. Rocker or Fernando R.? @ Nov 12th 2007 2:19PM
Poor Sony... they thought that they were safe.
Mr Khan @ Nov 12th 2007 2:22PM
Their decision was likely somewhat motivated by fear, because people always doubt the numbers they put out (as well as the others), and a more accurate, independent report can only help them (and the others, too)
Slaziman @ Nov 12th 2007 2:29PM
Fernando, you are not allowed to make Sony-bashing comments like everyone else. Other people get 3 hearts, you get half a heart for the same comment. It's just how it is man.
Also, they signed up for it themselves... though one could argue that if they didn't they would get even more fanboy hating.
samfish @ Nov 12th 2007 2:31PM
Fernando, you should just call yourself 'Going Down' because that's what your heart meter does.
...that and you hit on other male posters all the time :p
FidliousWong @ Nov 12th 2007 2:50PM
"Poor Sony... they thought that they were safe."
Umm, they agreed to release these numbers, yo.
Wait, it's Fernando. Logic gives way to popping blisters of Sony Hate which grow from his back from never cleaning his Punch-Out sheets bought from Sears many, many, many years ago. Little Mac won, already. Time to move on.
samfish @ Nov 12th 2007 3:06PM
You passed on a chance to turn that into a killer Gremlins reference what with the blisters/back thing.
But you didn't. Shame.
[-]'d!
FidliousWong @ Nov 12th 2007 3:18PM
I was going to go for a Gremlins reference but decided instead to pull a "dirty boy/pathetic fantard" zinger instead. Mainly because, as a Wii lad, I recall a foul smelling entity which had everything Nintendo themed. From his sheets to his bubblegum. And Fernando gives off that same vibe. I don't know of his hygiene personally, but it's a feeling I get.
Night Elve @ Nov 12th 2007 3:27PM
You should realize by now Fernando that no one here gives a damn about you.
Geez get a life man.
hvnlysoldr @ Nov 12th 2007 3:45PM
Start getting a life you guys. Oh right it's cool to hate on F. Rocker so totally do it. Totally derail arguments at the drop of a hat. Forget that you can ignore his comments easily by minusing them.
I like the stat tracking for software and hardware. I sort of want to see which titles are available and be astounded when certain titles can sell for months at a time.
James @ Nov 12th 2007 3:06PM
So Sony's pressure to stop their N
PD sales being published was quashed.
Hurray!
FidliousWong @ Nov 12th 2007 3:12PM
Where exactly does this concept come from? You and CheapyD love making this shit up. Essentially NPD said they would release the figures for a year and then make decisions later. All three makers have agreed to let NPD release this info. Look, here it is.
"GameDaily is reporting that the big three console manufacturers have all signed on to allow the monthly drip of sweet, fanboy-fueling data that has become a morphine-like addiction for the game media."
Forgive my ignorance but where does that read as...
"GameDaily is reporting that two of the three console manufacturers have all signed on to allow the monthly drip of sweet, fanboy-fueling data that has become a morphine-like addiction for the game media. However, Sony has decided they want to hide sales figures but Nintendo and Microsoft both said "fuck that pussy" and released their info anyway."
I mean, James, you're getting as bad as Fernando, buddy.
Slaziman @ Nov 12th 2007 4:31PM
I don't really like you FidliousWong, but
"Forgive my ignorance but where does that read as...

was awesome, gg
albinogoldfish @ Nov 12th 2007 3:27PM
Hurray! back to judging which console I like the most by which one sells th best...I love being a fanboy...
Rubang B (BRUSH WITH FAME) @ Nov 12th 2007 3:41PM
Meh. So I guess I'll still look at the NPD data once a month for one single country. VGChartz has every territory weekly, monthly, fiscal quarterly, and yearly, with every comparison and analysis from every angle under the sun. And it's free, and they post their numbers earlier. NPD is a bunch of whiny brats who are doing all this work for nothing and getting pissed off about it. They bitch and moan about VGChartz all the time and it's hilarious. Hilarious and pathetic. I wouldn't mind losing their numbers entirely, but hey, the more data the better. I'd trust either of them before I'd trust the console manufacturers themselves with all their bogus "shipped numbers."
hvnlysoldr @ Nov 12th 2007 3:47PM
You know what they said about the Titanic. Unsinkable ship my @$$1
Mr Khan @ Nov 12th 2007 4:10PM
Couldn't have said it better
VGChartz ftw
Slaziman @ Nov 12th 2007 4:36PM
You forgot the most important factor: ACCURACY
VGChartz is full of made up shit!
Rubang B (BRUSH WITH FAME) @ Nov 12th 2007 4:53PM
Where do VG Chartz North American Numbers Come From?
http://www.vgchartz.com/news/news.php?id=629
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Nov 12th 2007 5:08PM
Slazi, VGChartz is made of the same "made up shit" that NPD is made of, statistical analysis of polled numbers.
Slaziman @ Nov 12th 2007 5:11PM
Okay I'm converted
ares04 @ Nov 12th 2007 5:04PM
This is a good thing because it keeps all of the big names in circulation. Had NPD decided not to release its data, vgchartz.com would have just taken over.
