We're actually kind of perplexed by this video of a Guitar Hero fan who created a set-up to play the game with a MIDI drum kit. It's not because we don't know if it's impressive or not (it is). It's also not because we don't know how he's doing it (we do). What we can't figure out is this: Is Guitar Hero actually more awesome if you play it with drums? We've watched tons of Egyokeo's videos and we still just ... don't ... know.
Think about it: Rock Band has guitar and drums, right? But this guy's version of GH III has drums that are a guitar. It's two rock 'n' roll features rolled up in one. Which has us thinking: By that criteria, is Peter Frampton secretly the best video game ever?
Now if some one would only mod the game to be fun! (just dont like the teen music thats dubbed to be legends of rock, the icky boss battles, the insulting strippers, and ugly character design. Just IMO) Cool though.
"Since TTFAF is going to take lots more practice for me to be able to pass in any respectable manner, I thought I'd upload the first few sections that I've got down half way decently."
I dunno, I think I'm gonna have to call some sort of shenanigans on this one, and I'm not talking about the hold notes, I can understand programming something for that, but come on, what about the three notes, and the rapidfire notes he got some streaks on, not to mention the onscreen lag (though that is somewhat explainable.
Still, I'm not sold I'm officially registering with
That drum pad (drumKat) he's playing on is programmable, so each pad isn't necessarily a simple one pad to single midi signal trigger. From his FAQ:
Q: How do you do 3-note chords? A: All "two adjacent note" power chords are mapped to the top 4 pads, so with two hands I can play any 3-note chord except GYO.
I have one of the XIM boxes as well and am trying to get it setup so I can use a real electric guitar to play guitar hero.
Ill go something like guitar into soundcard, Software to translate pitch into midi. software to translate midi to key strokes. XIM to turn the keystrokes into ps2 output. XFPS to change ps2 output into 360 input.
Uhm, and you are permitted to do this on Guitar Hero?
Why not just make a mod that beats it for you so you can just beat it on expert...
And if it is real, I am sure that he has it so you don't have to actually play the notes but you just have to "strum" and it auto plays the notes. He just makes it look like hes hitting notes.
Totally looks fake to me. I think the drummer isn't really the controller and that someone out of view is playing. The drummer's still hitting the same area when notes hit change. Also, how do u hold a drum note like a guitar?
i dont believe that video at all. i dont see how you can hit 3 notes at the same time with only 2 sticks. also you have to hold the "fret" buttons to preform the long notes

2 words. bad ass.
T3H WICKERMAN,
Teen music? Granted some of the songs are new, but many of the songs are from the 70s, 80s, 90s.

The last block is the best. Maiden, Metallica, Slayer. Heart and weezer were good too. GH 2 set list was more up my arse, i mean alley.

Damn, that guy can midi drum like a madman. Still doesn't look like it's as much fun as playing Rock Band with your friends though.

That was unbelievable. Now play Dragonforce.

Now if only he could sing at the same time...
Gunner McGrath @ Nov 30th 2007 2:01PM
He's got explanations on the youtube page about the triplet chords and lag, amongst others.

Pretty silly, but I have most of the pieces.

Teen music? This is Muse's "Knights of Cydonia" : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knights_of_Cydonia . Without a doubt the best band at the moment, not their best song though.
