New games this week: Universe at War: Earth Assault edition [Updated]
We'll be the first to admit that last week, we wussed out. Instead of picking a single game to feature we told you to just go and play the stuff that had already been released and this week, you may still want to do that. But we didn't want you to think we were just being indecisive. So this week, the award goes to Universe at War: Earth Assault, which looks to be (if early reviews are any indication) a pretty solid RTS on PC. If that doesn't pique your interest ... well, we hope you like The Golden Compass.
[Update: Apparently, Universe at War is shipping next week. So ... congrats, Golden Compass. You did it.]

If its anything like in the beta I would recommend you stay far far FAR away from any sort of multiplayer gaming on this game. At least if you don't want massive crashing. Anywhoo.. lets just hope since the time I dropped this turd in place of crysis and going back to some regular old CnC3 or Age of Empires or even Empire Earth that they fixed up all the problems it had saaaay 3 weeks ago.

That's why a beta is called a beta and not a demo.
For a more accurate representation of the game's stability, I'd suggest trying out the demo (although granted, there's no multiplayer in the demo). You'll find a bunch of mirrors here:

And for modders, the UAW scene (which we'll be supporting wholeheartedly) is already starting to bloom, using the released demo:

Ugh. Bad week. Good thing I rented Super Mario Galaxy!
Oh, and for the record, I'm pretty sure it's "pique"
Zertoss @ Dec 3rd 2007 9:19AM
Pique is correct.
joevill @ Dec 3rd 2007 9:40AM
I agree

Universe at War has had a demo out for a couple weeks now, to those who are interested.
It's a deep strategy RTS from a very well respected developer, so I'm keeping positive about its potential. Unfortunately, it's also saddled with the whole Games for Windows Live mess, and it's the first third-party title to offer cross platform play with the 360.
All that adds up to almost certain multiplayer growing pains. The good news is that such problems can be fixed over time, as long as the core gameplay is solid. The bad news is that people may not give it a chance to do so.
Regardless, if you're into just the single player experience (as supposedly most players are), this should be a great game.

Actually, I'm not sure Universe at War is even releasing this week. Gamestop/EB's site claims it does, but Amazon is saying Dec. 10th. Amazon has a better track record with release dates, in my experience.

Bad week, unless you think Universe at War is good.
I guess the DBZ fans will have their day on the Wii, but that's about it.
Oh and for the cost of a REAL Jenga set you can buy a Wii version! wewt!
gonk @ Dec 3rd 2007 11:10AM
rts's are boring
Sieged Eagle @ Dec 3rd 2007 11:49AM
I beg to differ. The only good RTS games out there are Command and Conquer and Starcraft. Both for the PC of course. Warcraft II is pretty good too.
This one is hoping that Starcraft II is as good or even better than the first one, and it retains that epic Bliz-type story that has made all of its games famous. The only thing I don't want to happen is that it ends like WCIII.
ogvor @ Dec 3rd 2007 12:12PM
Starcraft and Command and Conquer are great, but last year I discovered Homeworld 2, which is pretty much the game I've always wanted. Dawn of War and Company of Heroes are also great RTS's that don't focues on resources and dimplomacy, rather tactics and combat. As much as this game looks interesting, with distinct factions and everything, I don't have very high hopes for it after I got all excited for Maelstorm and that Star Wars RTS that let me down.
gonk @ Dec 3rd 2007 12:20PM
is company of heroes that ww2 rts that came out late last year or early this year? that one was fun for about an hour
Mr.ESC @ Dec 3rd 2007 11:25AM
Yu-gi-oh GX WC08 DS isn't that bad if anyone wants to know, basically the online keeps it fun but the story mode still sucks.
FidliousWong @ Dec 3rd 2007 12:59PM
Quick question, has there been any story mode in a card game worth playing? I mean, I'm doing Cardfighters DS right now and this seems like the high end of this kind of tripe.
Mr.ESC @ Dec 3rd 2007 1:22PM
Metal Gear Ac!D 2 story mode is actually good, that game is highly underated.
ThePassenger @ Dec 3rd 2007 12:06PM
I'll plump fo DBZ for various reasons, although the main one is simply that it is online.
Ihar `Philips` Filipau @ Dec 3rd 2007 12:22PM
Somehow shots of "Universe at War" reminded me of good ol' "Total Anihilation". What'a game that was...
Cabal @ Dec 3rd 2007 1:10PM
I wish Universe at War was still coming out this week, but its been pushed to next week.
Caster @ Dec 3rd 2007 11:47PM
Hey, The Golden Compass was a great book. Can't wait to see the movie!
B1gC72 @ Dec 3rd 2007 2:18PM
eh, weak week. only thing noteworthy for me is DBZ:BT3 on Wii but i really didnt like the second one on Wii. im a big DBZ:Budokai fan but i thought the motion controls on the last one were a little clunky and unorthodox. oh well, finals are coming up so i dont really have much gaming time anyway.
jake11 @ Dec 3rd 2007 4:53PM
American Girl: Julie Finds a Way
I'm speechless
driph @ Dec 3rd 2007 5:36PM
Universe at War ships on December 10th, but we really do appreciate the props. :]
