November NPD: Everyone's a winner
Except your bank balance. Much like the annual migration of the Christmas Island red crabs, November sees consumer money move en masse from wallets and into ravenous cash registers -- no amount of intervention can stop it. According to the NPD's latest US video game sales data, the industry incurred sales of a staggering $2.63 billion, with console hardware in particular making up $771 million. Software was the big winner though (chart after the break), with sales rising 74% to $1.1 billion.
If you want to talk winners in terms of internet flamefests, you'd best mention Nintendo and its continued ability to trump everyone else at the table. The Nintendo DS flew off shelves at a rate so alarming, you'd think it's an essential requirement for survival. In certain aspects, it is -- if you turned down your child's request for one, you'll likely wake up on Christmas morning with an axe planted in your face. As you might expect, Nintendo's other system also bested its console counterparts, though it's the sort of race where you win a gold medal even when you come in dead last. Congratulations PlayStation 3, that price cut finally put you on the (very large and crowded) podium!

You barely need our vague commentary at this point, but in case simple charts confuse and bewilder you, know that Call of Duty 4, Super Mario Galaxy and Assassin's Creed were really, really popular.

Girl in the gray sweater up front is still SMOKIN HOT!
I'm sorry but whenever you use this pic, that comes to mind.
Ahem.

yeah, if you're into unibrows ...
jovin6 @ Dec 13th 2007 8:40PM
Nah, I think her brow is fine. But she for sure has braces and a massive underbite.
Also, she's completely fugly.
rv @ Dec 13th 2007 9:10PM
Shes just alright. However, we need better angles to make a more accurate judgment.
Orbberius @ Dec 13th 2007 10:40PM
Isn't it wonderful that we have so many pedophilia experts on hand?

what? you must be mistaken
jovin6 @ Dec 14th 2007 2:31AM
Huh? How do you know I'm not 17. Or that she isn't 18. What makes this pedophilia?
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Dec 14th 2007 11:42AM
Methinks someone doesn't know what pedophilia is.
And being attracted sexually to a 17 year old is hardly pedophilia.
Justin @ Dec 14th 2007 5:39PM
If by smoking hot you mean has great womanly happy sacks then I have to agree with you.
deaftly @ Dec 13th 2007 7:48PM
the ps3 is a mighty fine caboose

there's junk in the trunk
severian00 @ Dec 13th 2007 8:39PM
Is that the PS2 still outselling the PS3, ouch. Anybody counting how many million sellers for the 360 so far this year? Didn't Shane Kim or Jeff Bell or somebody say there would be 10? You got Halo 3, Bioshock, now Assassin's Creed, COD4, and more than likely Mass Effect. Where are the others? Although 5 isn't too bad.
Spiza @ Dec 14th 2007 12:08AM
I can't believe you forgot madden Guitar Hero 3.
Also crackdown.
Raikage (ROFLBERRY PWNCAKES Defence Force) @ Dec 14th 2007 12:28AM
I'm almost positive it was 7 million sellers.....
Yeah I'm positive.
ExMcloud @ Dec 14th 2007 2:11AM
Did Rock Band sell a million yet? And oh yeah Mass Effect sold a million in 3 weeks...
Trev (Completely Normal Human Defense Force) @ Dec 13th 2007 7:48PM
Didn't Sony deny the MS claim that they outsold the PS3 2:1? That was specifically for Black Friday though. Either way, they sure didn't do it for the month.
...damn that is a ton of consoles in total. Lots of people are getting what they want for Christmas, it seems.
David @ Dec 13th 2007 8:03PM
The ratio of XBox360 to PS3 sales is 1.65, not 2.
Trev (Completely Normal Human Defense Force) @ Dec 13th 2007 8:17PM
Hey, I really like my PS3, but Sony was so uppity with their "nuh-uh" I expected better than that. In lieu of my vague comment, I meant that they didn't live up to the snippiness of their response. That's not a number they should be bragging about.
That's what I get for posting while on the phone though.
David @ Dec 13th 2007 8:36PM
Yeah, you're right. I expected a more impressive showing too, based on that comment.
KHCloud @ Dec 13th 2007 11:40PM
However the PS3 hasn't certainly had the most growth, now to see if that continues this month and the next and the next...
Carl Abrams @ Dec 14th 2007 7:50AM
What's amusing is how many people are buying the 40GB PS3 - and how many are RETURNING the 40GB PS3 because they didn't know it wouldn't play PS2 games.
Carlos @ Dec 14th 2007 10:45AM
@ Carl Abrams:
is that so? people are returning 40gig ps3's because of no backwards compatibility?! that'd be bad
Trev (Completely Normal Human Defense Force) @ Dec 14th 2007 2:54PM
Do you have any proof of this Carl? A link or something?
I imagine it's happened at least once (logically not only once out of 466,000 this month) but I'd still like to see some sort of source other than my own "I guess it doesn't sound impossible".
Santo @ Dec 13th 2007 7:48PM
I'm surprised that the 360 version of GHIII isn't on the software list. It's been sold out every time I go in to Best Buy.
Loki_d20 @ Dec 13th 2007 9:12PM
I think that's because they only put out a limited number for the 360 and PS3 in comparison to the PS2. We still have a few for the Wii in our area as well, but lots of PS2.
Of course, what's really not selling are the Halo special edition 360s. Still have a huge stack of those at each of our Best Buys in the area.
Zingerhill @ Dec 14th 2007 10:48AM
I also think this is a supply issue. I had the hardest time finding a copy of GH III with the wireless controller. I had to keep calling my local FYE. Then the copy I got was broken!
I understand Rock Band is great, but I just ain't going to add more wires and a USB Hub to the living room. Call me when you're wireless.
umm....hello??? @ Dec 14th 2007 1:11PM
@zinger
I actually prefer the wires--no need to charge everything up and/or replace batteries constantly. The wires aren't too bad, they blend right in with all the wires for my surround sound setup--so far my gf hasn't complained (although I had the surround sound setup wayyy before I found her).
grapejoos @ Dec 14th 2007 1:29PM
I hear you on the wireless zinger, but frankly, with the amount of stuff that Rock Band adds to your living room as it is, the wires are not really a significant issue. Would have been nice for the guitar, but it doesn't matter much at all for the rest. I'm a happy Rock Band owner, but trust me, in a small apartment, it's a drop in the (very large) bucket.
shivr @ Dec 13th 2007 7:49PM
interesting... the platforms GH3 is selling the most on for november are ps2 and wii.. I know my friend cannot find a wii version to gift her bf with for xmas, and she freakin works at walmart
DaiMac79 @ Dec 13th 2007 7:51PM
Looks like the PSP is selling well, I saw a guy buy two PSPs at Circuit City earlier today.
JodyAnthony (Good Eats Defense Force) @ Dec 13th 2007 7:52PM

Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Dec 13th 2007 8:25PM
WHAT???? OVER 9000????
sheppy2.0 @ Dec 13th 2007 8:33PM
I was hoping DS would break the 3 million record....
Then again, when I was trying to find a DS (not a bundle) for my mother for christmas, I did have issues finding one. First time that EVER happened for me...

@ JodyAnthony,
I believe it as a couple of my friends re-bought a DS for the Zelda Special Edition DS. Me, I'm sticking with the crimson/black combo. The gold color seems like it would grow really old after a while.
matt @ Dec 13th 2007 7:58PM
To look at it from the fanboy's view, Wii had the least sales increase.
Meloche @ Dec 13th 2007 8:11PM
The sales of the Wii can't really increase when there are none in the shops...
Grog @ Dec 13th 2007 9:41PM
Actually, the Wii had the largest (console) sales increase with 462k compared to 404k for 360 and 345k for PS3. It had the lowest relative/percentage increase.
Then again, it's probably a matter of limited supply as the previous poster said.
