Realistic kart racer coming to XBLA/PSN/PC

Okay, we're a bit confused. We've always assumed that kart racing games were better suited to zany characters, wacky power-ups, and fantastical tracks -- rather than a Gran Turismo sense of realism. Developer Blimey Games, however, seeks to prove us wrong, with their high-definition racer tentatively titled Kart Attack.

The name suggests that red shells and banana peels would fit right in, but the work-in-progress screenshots make us doubt that they'll be anything out of the ordinary about the game. Blimey states that Kart Attack is being developed for Xbox Live Arcade, Playstation Network, and Games for Windows Live, and will feature "stunning next generation graphics", and online mutliplayer.

We'll keep our fingers crossed for at least some Road Rash-style kart-to-kart attacks. How much fun could realistic virtual kart racing actually be?

Graphics ain't bad at all for an XBLA game. Agreed though, I don't want a plain ol' racing sim with karts replacing kars, let me punch/kick/chain/pipe any karter that komes near me.

Erm...very? Traditional racing games with their fat, heat, soft cars are all well and good, but with a kart sim you'll get super-precision and zippy cornering. Sounds like a proper laugh to me.

...Yeah, if you're actually doing the racing sitting in the kart yourself, and NOT sitting in your home with a controller in hand. There's a reason this is the first game of it's kind (kart simulation). And if the developer is making this game for the sole factor that it IS the first of it's kind would be sad on so many levels...

There have been several go-kart simulator games.

Couldn't the same be said about any computer simulation game? If it's fun, it's fun. If you don't like racing games, chances are you'll hate this kart game, but if you're a racing sim freak like me, this will (hopefully) be a welcome diversion from the unoriginality which has clouded car games for about 10 years.

And if this has online multiplayer, it could well become a (minor/major?) cult hit.

Kart games are only fun and popular BECAUSE they're unrealistic. Realistically.... go-karts kinda suck. The only reason they're fun at all is because you're actually in them and they feel like they're going fast, since they're small and low to the ground. You lose all that when you're sitting on your couch watching it on the big screen. What made Mario Kart so good was the arcade-style action - power slides and powerups and fantastical tracks.

That's the one thing the current generation of consoles has really failed at - making a FUN racing game. I don't care if it's authentic, I want to laugh out loud with my friends. None of the current gen racing games do that. They require way too much precision for pick-up games with friends.

This game is going to be awesome. I better be able to punch people in the neck and kick their tires though. Chains, cattle prods, and nunchakus and fire extinguishers would be a plus.

I suppose. Maybe if you could dive off your kart and onto an opponents kart, then wrestle them off while going a blazing uh... 35mph then that might be cool too.

I think this is one of those times where the real thing is much funner than a video game.

Sure, people enjoy car racing games because you can go as you want without risk of injury, but with cart racing, there's no risk of injury. It's like playing a walking simulator.

eh, i dont see how this could be much fun without the arcade style play that doesnt look like it would fit with this games aim. it sure is pretty to look at though!

and why the hell dont we have a next-gen (or current-gen if you wanna be a dick) Road Rash yet? i completely forgot how fun that game was. a remake with updated graphics would be great (but then again, it is an EA game...). im about to go boot up some emulators and play it right now!
