Crysis sales in crisis; UT3 gets fragged too
Perhaps this can be considered a lesson for game developers eager to deliver tomorrow's game technology today: Crysis hit the PC market with an exoskeleton-enhanced thud. The critically praised -- but processing intensive -- title sold a disappointing 86,633 units in the States following its Nov. 13 release.
Holding hands with Crysis is Epic's Unreal Tournament 3 which sold an even more disappointing 33,995 units following its Nov. 19 release. Although not a pixel pushing monster on the level of say, oh ... Crysis, the Unreal Engine 3 game is still a beast in an already crowded genre. At the very least UT3 will make up some sales with the recently released PS3 version and the future Xbox 360 version.
We're ready for that Crysis console announcement whenever you are, EA.

I can't say I didn't see it coming.
Brello @ Dec 15th 2007 2:41AM
Yeah, I agree. I'm not shocked in the least.
t_m @ Dec 15th 2007 3:45AM
Are we free to lol?
those of us that pointed this out ages ago, and got shouted at and told we weren;t hardcore enough and should just stfu and upgrade our systems?
DP @ Dec 15th 2007 11:05PM
Sanctimonious PC developers... what idiots. Did they really think this thing was going to be such a hit?
howl @ Dec 14th 2007 9:51PM
"title sold a disappointing 86,633 units in the States"
I doubt theres that many computers that can even handle this game!
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Dec 15th 2007 4:11AM
yeah half of those were probably bought by kids who thought they could run it on their lame 1992 packard-bell pc
next time, make a game thats PLAYABLE without having to drop an extra $1000.
rockintom @ Dec 15th 2007 10:41AM
Just to let you know, I ran the demo on medium settings nicely with a 6800 I bought for less than a hundred dollars. Just because it *can* be the best looking game ever doesn't mean it has to be.
Blue_Falcon @ Dec 14th 2007 9:51PM
Well, you can't really blame UT3. It is on the PS3 after all. LOL!!!!
But seriously, I am interested in seeing if UT3 for the 360 has any drastic differences in terms of sales, after seeing this.
Draco @ Dec 14th 2007 9:58PM
You sir are a moron.
Fatass of Kickassness @ Dec 14th 2007 10:12PM
Yeah, you're a complete moron for even entertaining the idea that putting a game on a system that has sold more units, would sell more copies of the game.
Shame on you.
Draco @ Dec 14th 2007 10:25PM
We are talking PC sales, how does this have anything to do with PS3 or 360?
Undead Priest @ Dec 14th 2007 11:35PM
Draco can't spot an obvious joke.
Jamesology @ Dec 14th 2007 11:39PM
Yeah I agree with Draco and Fatass that Blue Falcon is a Moron.
Everyone make a note that Blue Falcon is a Moron!
ruibing @ Dec 14th 2007 11:41PM
Wow, did you even read past the title and the low sale before you put two and two together to get three?
hotnutz @ Dec 15th 2007 6:14AM
Agreed - Blue Falcon is illiterate or such and advanced case of ADD, he can't even read a paragraph.
James @ Dec 15th 2007 1:54PM
Haha. You can really tell Draco was caught out and won't be posting or even looking here again!
What a twunt.
ZippyDSMlee @ Dec 15th 2007 6:43PM
360 dose sale FPSs rather well and thats where the burnt of FPS buyers are now adays so it will be interesting to see what the sales are.
Obie @ Dec 14th 2007 9:53PM
What do you expect if the only computers that can run this game are HAL, SkyNet and the Matrix.
Ellianth @ Dec 15th 2007 12:59PM
Actually Crysis running on the matrix was a hoax. It caused a weird bug where some guy became "the one" and some other guy named smith found a duplication hack and started cloning himself.
Josh Himself @ Dec 14th 2007 9:55PM
People sure love Torrents :)
Jeremy White @ Dec 14th 2007 9:57PM
I honestly don't think even pirating had anything to do with these poor sales.
MasterInsan0 @ Dec 14th 2007 10:07PM
Yeah, I think the poor sales have more to do with the inability of peoples' computers to run these games well. I mean, it's great and all to push the envelope, but if you push it too far no one can even play your game.
LordMinogue @ Dec 14th 2007 10:10PM
I'd bet there are more pirated copies of the game being used then legit ones. On my floor in my dorm there are maybe 7 copies of Crysis - only one of these guys actually bought the game.
Draco @ Dec 14th 2007 10:28PM
This game is geared towards the same class of people who pirate their games, hard hard core PC gamers (Hard core PC gamers = Hard core console gamers x 1.75)
the average consumer and the casual are the ones that buy games, the hard core don't generally, unless there is no option to play online without purchase. thats why I think Steam is a very important step in the PC game industry.
gonk @ Dec 14th 2007 10:36PM
yeah
plus a lot of people wouldn't buy crysis anyway, since their comps can't run it too well, but if it's free they'll suffer through some stuttering for the experience
Draco @ Dec 14th 2007 10:39PM
Agreed 100% gonk.
ark_v2 @ Dec 15th 2007 12:00AM
I think 86,633 copies are a lot more than the PCs that can actually run crysis on a playable framerate, and downloading it ilegally won't help a crappy PC to run it.
ark_v2 @ Dec 15th 2007 12:00AM

Zarim @ Dec 15th 2007 12:08AM
Anyone who spends $300+ on a video card will most likely know how bit torrent works. And just for reference, Crysis sold 33k units, there's currently a torrent for the game with 4k seeders and 15k leechers.
Jeff @ Dec 15th 2007 12:49AM
I love how people who clearly aren't PC gamers, who probably use computers their parents bought them to talk about shit they don't know on a gaming blog, talk about how difficult it is to run Crysis.
On low settings, Crysis looks better than Halo-- there, I said it, fuckers-- and can run on just about any recent PC with a decent graphics card. On medium settings, it looks better than almost any other PC game, and can run at 60+ FPS on just about any gaming rig. For those who want to spend the money: on high, it is unrivaled, and on very high, it is unrivaled for another year or so. It's the best possible way they could have done it.
Ally @ Dec 15th 2007 1:47PM
That isnt the point jeff, we all know it looks good but im not paying £40 to play a game on low settings and have to buy a new PC to play it on High.
Moofree @ Dec 14th 2007 9:57PM
Wait... UT3 is out?
(half-joking)
Poisoned Al @ Dec 15th 2007 5:49AM
Yeah, that game got blotted out by the shadows colossal AAA titles this year. 360 owners have Halo 3, PC owners have an unbroken Team Fortress 2 and PS3 owner have Warhawk.
Nobody cares.
Durinthal @ Dec 14th 2007 10:00PM
There's a reason for low sales of UT3, at least on the PC. It's a straight port of the PS3 version, which means the handling on some of the vehicles is horrible with the keyboard and the UI as a whole is several steps back from what UT2004 has.
ab @ Dec 14th 2007 10:33PM
You're talking about Unreal right? Because Unreal has always had PC priority. Technically, the PS3 is the direct port of the PC version.
Durinthal @ Dec 14th 2007 11:37PM
Yes, I'm talking about Unreal Tournament 3. It's pretty obvious if you've played it that it wasn't designed for the PC this time around. At least the patches are trying to get it up to par.
fluffbox @ Dec 15th 2007 12:15AM
I played it on a computer where the resolution has to be turned way down and I have to say.. The vehicles handle wonderfully. They're a lot better than the ones in UT2004.
Jeff @ Dec 15th 2007 12:52AM
Yeah honestly, the vehicles handle perfectly now. I hated the vehicles in 2k4; it's all a matter of opinion.
Shockgamer @ Dec 14th 2007 10:00PM
With the glut of FPS games that came out this fall, there were bound to be some high-profile losers.
Between Master Chief, the Modern Army and Gordon Freeman's troupe, who has time for anything else?
If only UT waited until 2008...if only Crysis waited until....uh, 2010.
Durandel @ Dec 14th 2007 10:34PM
By 2010 Halo 4 will be out :P
Joshua @ Dec 14th 2007 10:02PM
I think people are bored of first person shooters.
Moofree @ Dec 14th 2007 10:13PM
The solution? Portal gun in every game.
J.R. @ Dec 15th 2007 12:21AM
You know, like the 4,000,000 people in the U.S. who have purchased Halo 3.
bm @ Dec 15th 2007 7:39AM
JR: with the amount of advertising that game has received, it would've sold as much if it had been a Halo-themed text adventure.
Eddie @ Dec 20th 2007 4:53PM
Isn't it incredible what happens when only one gamemaker has an advertising budget?
Wait, what? They all do?
Oh, hell, your argument fails, jm. Sorry dude.
ncxcstud @ Dec 14th 2007 10:08PM
I think people just can't afford to keep up with the demands of new pc games Joshua...
Look to Halo 3 and COD4 to find out if people are 'bored' with FPS.....they aren't...
Joshua @ Dec 14th 2007 10:12PM
I don't mean as a whole genre, but people are starting to be like, "OK, there are so many of these games out there, I'm just going to stick with a couple of them that I know I really like." The market is way too oversaturated, and the experience offered is mostly the same between all the "different" games.
Alucard @ Dec 14th 2007 10:09PM
I think people are just playing halo. New maps anyone?
Moofree @ Dec 14th 2007 10:13PM
I'm still playing Tribes.
Secura @ Dec 14th 2007 10:20PM
What's Halo? Isn't that those things that angels always have over their heads in pictures?
